The Whittington Double Carport – LOJ Collection

The Whittington Double is the size most households settle on: two cars, side by side, under one broad shingled roof. What sets the Whittington apart is its curved laminated beams, which give the roof a soft arch rather than a hard triangle — a good deal handsomer than the usual carport, and worth the difference on a front drive you look at every day.

A timber carport suits a driveway for practical reasons as well as good looks. There are no doors to heave up in the rain, the open sides give you room to walk right round both cars with the shopping, and frost, sap, bird mess and leaf-fall all stay off the paintwork. It goes up in days rather than weeks, it needs no foundations beyond the drive you already have, and it will usually sit more comfortably next to a house than a steel or plastic shelter. The pressure-treated redwood weathers to a soft silver-honey over the years, or you can keep the colour with an exterior stain.

Specification

Will two cars really fit? Comfortably, yes — two family cars side by side with room to open the doors. Measure to the clear width between the posts rather than the overall width, and allow a little extra if you regularly load children or shopping from the side. If you need a third bay, or want two cars plus a covered working or seating area, the Whittington Triple is the next step up.

Base and planning: The carport needs a firm, level surface to stand on — an existing concrete, block-paved or tarmac drive is usually ideal, as the post holders anchor straight down into it. Delivery & installation: Made to order and delivered on a 13.6m articulated lorry — please note that arranging a team to unload the pallet on site is the customer's responsibility.
