Quick answer
A 6x4 shed is the classic first shed. It holds a lawn mower, hand tools, a few garden chairs and the bits that clutter a garage, without taking over a small garden. Choose apex for more headroom in the middle, pent to tuck it against a fence, and look closely at the cladding, the door width and the base before you buy.
Six feet by four feet is the size most people picture when they say "a shed". It is big enough to step inside and turn round, small enough to fit down the side of a lawn or behind a garage. Because it is such a popular size, almost every range we sell comes in 6x4, so the real choice is about how it is built.
Who a 6x4 shed suits
- Smaller gardens where you want storage, not a hobby room.
- Storing a mower, strimmer, hand tools, a few bags of compost and folding furniture.
- A first shed, or a second shed to free up space in a bigger one.
If you also want to keep bikes inside or stand at a bench, look at our 8x6 sheds. If space is really tight, our small sheds guide covers slim tool stores and corner sheds.
What to look for in a 6x4 shed
- Cladding: overlap is the budget option; tongue and groove shiplap is tighter and more weatherproof. Some ranges let you pick the thickness, for example Suresheds in 12mm, 16mm or 20mm.
- Framing: a thicker frame makes a stiffer shed. Compare the frame sizes listed on each product page.
- Roof: apex or pent? Apex gives more headroom; pent sits lower near a fence.
- Door: check the width if a mower has to go in. The Suresheds Nidderdale has a 1 metre extra-wide door.
- Windows: handy for light, but some people prefer fewer or narrow windows for security.
- Base: most brands sell a matching base kit in 6x4. See sheds with a base.

Common questions
Is a 6x4 shed big enough for a lawn mower?
For most push mowers, yes, along with hand tools and a few bags of compost. Check the door width on the product page so the mower goes in easily, and leave space to reach the back.
Is 6x4 measured as width by depth?
Sizes are nominal, so the exact measurements vary by brand and roof style. Each product page lists the real dimensions, and our shed sizes guide explains the difference.
Do I need a base for a 6x4 shed?
Yes. Any timber shed needs a firm, level base. Most brands sell a matching 6x4 base kit, or see our base guide for slabs and concrete.
