Quick answer
A 10x8 shed gives you room for storage and a workbench, or a full garden's worth of kit. At this size the build quality matters more: look for a heavier frame, thicker cladding and floor, a wide door and a roof height that suits your plot.
Ten feet by eight feet is where a shed starts to feel like a room. You can line one wall with shelving, keep bikes and the mower by the door and still have space to work. It also means more weight, more roof and more wind load, so it is worth paying attention to how the building is put together.
Who a 10x8 shed suits
- Larger gardens, allotment-style growers and households with lots of kit.
- DIYers who want a bench as well as storage. See also our workshop sheds.
- Anyone replacing a garage for storage, or wanting a steel or concrete building that needs little upkeep.
What to look for in a 10x8 shed
- Framing: compare frame sizes. The Suresheds Wharfedale uses a 3"x2" frame, Sovereign Cumbria 44x44mm and Power Premium 58x44mm. Our heavy-duty sheds page goes into more detail.
- Height: wider apex roofs are taller at the ridge. The Shedlands Dutch Barn reaches 2700mm and has a braced loft. If you are within 2 metres of a boundary, check the height with our planning checker.
- Doors and windows: double doors make big items easy to move; more glazing gives light to work by.
- Material: timber, steel or concrete. Our timber vs metal vs concrete guide compares them.
- Base: most brands sell a matching base kit. See sheds with a base.

Common questions
Do I need planning permission for a 10x8 shed?
Often not, but it depends on height, position and how much of your garden is covered. In England, a building within 2 metres of a boundary should be no more than 2.5m high to stay within permitted development. Use our planning permission checker and ask your council if unsure.
What base does a 10x8 shed need?
A firm, level base the size of the floor. Timber sheds can sit on a base kit, slabs or concrete; concrete buildings need a concrete base. Our base guide explains each option.
