Quick answer
A security shed makes it harder for an opportunist to get in: reinforced doors, better locks, hinges that cannot be unscrewed from outside, and small or high windows so nobody can see what is inside. For the most valuable kit, steel and concrete buildings are worth a look too.
Bikes, mowers and power tools are expensive to replace. A standard shed with a hasp and padlock is easy to get into, so it is worth looking at the features that make a real difference, all of which are listed on the product pages.
Who a security shed suits
- Anyone storing bikes, power tools or garden machinery.
- Sheds that are out of sight of the house or near a lane or alley.
- Tradespeople keeping tools at home.
Security features to look for
- Locks: the Power Apex Security and Premium Apex Security sheds come with a pre-fitted 5-pin cylinder lock.
- Hinges: internal hinges (Suresheds Nidderdale) or security bolted hinges (Shedlands Security) are harder to remove.
- Pad bolt protector: stops a padlock and bolt being levered off.
- Windows: narrow or high windows let light in without showing off what is inside. The Shedlands Security has an internally glazed 1220mm x 150mm window.
- Framing: the Shedlands Security sheds have framing every 1ft; the Nidderdale has extra bracing.
- Material: Lifelong steel sheds have a solid steel security door with a steel locking bolt. Compare materials in timber vs metal vs concrete.
- Base: a shed bolted down to a solid base is harder to tamper with. See sheds with a base.

Common questions
What makes a shed secure?
A strong door and frame, a proper lock rather than a basic hasp, hinges that cannot be removed from outside and windows that do not show what is inside.
Is a metal shed more secure than a wooden one?
A steel shed with a solid steel security door is a strong option and needs no painting or treatment. A well-built timber security shed is also a big step up from a standard shed. Compare them in our materials guide.
